Nigeria has opened a closed training camp for its wheelchair basketball teams as preparations intensify for the 2026 Commonwealth Games qualifiers in Angola, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation invited 16 players to the camp at Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, with training scheduled to run from March 8 to 21.

The camp is aimed at fine-tuning tactics and building cohesion ahead of the qualifying tournament in Luanda from March 22 to 27.

Eight players have been selected in the men’s category, including Shittu Musbau, Adetayo Kehinde, Abel Oluwaseun, Akinde Tony, Bailey Oluwasegun, Durowoju Babalola, Mohammed Muritala and Rilwan Abubakir.

The women’s squad features Olabisi Ijigbamigbe, Nofisat Adefala, Amakor Patricia, Aishat Yahaya, Christiana Olowolagba, Grace Nwaozuzu and Folashade Obagbemi.

The qualifiers will be staged as the 2026 IWBF Africa 3×3 Championship, which serves as the pathway to the Commonwealth Games.

President of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, Oluwaseyi Johnson, expressed confidence in the team’s readiness and ambition. He said the federation had put measures in place to ensure adequate preparation for the championship.

“We are fully prepared and determined to excel at the 2026 IWBF Africa 3×3 Championship, which serves as the Commonwealth Games qualifiers,” Johnson said.

“Our players are committed, and the technical crew is working tirelessly to ensure we put up a strong performance.”

He commended the National Sports Commission for its continued backing, noting that the support has created a stable environment for the teams to prepare effectively.

“We appreciate the leadership of the National Sports Commission in creating an enabling environment for us to prepare adequately,” he added.

“With this level of support and dedication from our athletes, I am confident Nigeria will make the nation proud on the continental stage.”

The federation believes the structured camp and early preparations will strengthen Nigeria’s chances of securing qualification and reinforcing its presence in continental wheelchair basketball competition.
