Commonwealth Games: Amusan arrives Team Nigeria camp

World record holder Tobi Amusan has arrived at Team Nigeria’s training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, as preparations intensify for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The reigning Commonwealth Games women’s 100m hurdles champion joins the Nigerian contingent after a consistent campaign on the Diamond League circuit, where she has already secured her place in the season-ending final in Brussels, Belgium, with four meetings still remaining.

Amusan is expected to be one of Team Nigeria’s brightest medal prospects in Glasgow as she targets a third consecutive Commonwealth Games title in the women’s 100m hurdles, having won gold at the 2018 and 2022 editions.

The 29-year-old has enjoyed another impressive season, successfully defending her African title earlier this year in Ghana and posting a season’s best of 12.28s, a time she has recorded on three occasions this year.

She will start as the favourite for gold against a field that includes Jamaican duo Megan Simmonds and Kerrica Hill, South Africa’s Marione Fourie, England’s Emma Nwofor, Barbados pair Adeyah Brewster and Maya Rollins, Canada’s Mariam Abdul-Rashid and Tatiana Aholou, Ghana’s Evonne Britton, Kenya’s Rukia Nusra Omulisia and Australia’s Michelle Jenneke.

Team Nigeria opened camp in Aberdeen last week, with athletes training at the Aberdeen Sports Village ahead of the Games.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s preparations have been dealt a major blow following the withdrawal of long jump star Ese Brume through injury.

Brume has been ruled out of the Games, ending her hopes of defending the women’s long jump title she won at the previous edition, where she set a Games record with a leap of 7.00m.

In her absence, Ruth Usoro has been drafted into the squad and will compete alongside Prestina Ochonogor in the women’s long jump as Team Nigeria aims to maintain its strong tradition in the event at the Commonwealth Games.
