Algeria will this Sunday square up with Nigeria in Cairo in the semi-final of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations holding in Egypt.
The Desert Foxes booked a ticket on Thursday night after a grueling quarter-final clash with another heavyweight – the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire. The game produced no winner in full and extra time, necessitating the resort to penalty shootouts to decide the winner.
The North Africans had taken the lead in 21 minutes through Sofiane Feghouli and failed to extent their lead early in the second half when Baghdad Bounedjah failed to score from the spot in the 49th minute, hitting the woodwork instead.
The West Africans eventually drew level through Jonathan Kodjia in the 62nd minute and efforts thereafter by both teams to get the winner proved abortive.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, Wilfried Bony and Serey Die missed for the Ivoriens while only Youcef Belaili missed for Algeria.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria had been waiting to know their next opponents since Wednesday night when they overcame hard-fighting arch-rivals Bafana Bafana of South Africa 2-1 to pick a semi-final ticket.
Senegal had earlier booked a place in the semis and will take on either Tunisia or giant killers Madagascar – both of whom are currently locked in combat for the last semi-final spot.
