Amusan, Egbeniyi Qualify For NCAA Championships

By Daily Sports on May 29, 2017

University of Texas in El Paso’s Tobiloba Amusan dominated the 100m hurdles at the NCAA West Region Preliminaries, racing home first in her 100m hurdles heat in a wind-aided 12.57 seconds to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

It would be the petite Nigerian’s second trip to the American collegiate championships after finishing second to Kentucky’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn last year.

Also set for Eugene, Oregon for the championships is Nigeria’s rising middle distance star Abike Egbeniyi of Middle Tennessee University in the USA who ran a new personal best and school record time of 2:02.34 at the East Regional Preliminaries in Lexington, Kentucky.

Egbeniyi won heat three of the 800m event ahead of school mate, Ghana’s Agnes Abu (2:02.93) and becomes the first bonafide Nigerian woman to run in the NCAA Championships after making history at the indoor version last March, running all the way to the final of the event.

Egbeniyi’s time is the second fastest time run by a Nigerian woman in the event after Grace Ebor’s 2:02.04 finish at the All Africa Games in Abuja in October 2003.

Meanwhile Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor was disappointing at the Eugene, Oregon IAAF Diamond League meeting on Saturday.

The 2013 IAAF World Championships silver and bronze medallists placed sixth in the long jump event, leaping a pedestrian, by her own standard, 6.52m.

The event was won by USA’s Britney Reese (7.01m) with reigning World Champion Tianna Bartoleta second (6.83m) while Great Britain’s Ugen Lorraine came third with her 6.78m jump.
