Western Zonal Vice President of Lady Golfers Association of Nigeria (LGAN), Mrs. Maureen Reece, has emphatically said that this year’s championship which tees off October 28 and ends on the 30th in Lafarge Golf Course in Sagamu, Ogun State, will be one-stop judging from the arrangements already on ground for its success.
She made the declaration in Lagos during the week that the Lady Golfers Western Zone would leave nothing to chance in ensuring its growth and more accepted by intending young golfers and other lovers of the beautiful sport.
According to her, this year’s summit holds at the very prestigious Lafarge Golf Course, Sagamu Ogun State. She further assured that it would attract friends and lovers of the game to make it a tournament its deep memories would linger on.
“We are expecting between 400 – 500 people and as you know our male golfers will play as guests. There will be trophies for winners, though there is no winner or loser in the one big and united family game. We will continue to strive to uphold the tenets of the fast developing sport in the country,” she remarked.
Reece also revealed that the ‘catch them young’ phrase won’t just be a mere slogan but in deeds and bonds as the future of the game belongs to the younger ones.
“Let me restate that among many challenges facing the development of the game, attracting emerging and retaining female golfers has been pivotal. It is against that background that LGAN Western Zone is shouldered with the responsibility of promoting the game among female gender with particular interest in younger players,” she explains.
Reece, a respected golfer and former Lady Captain of the golf section of Ikoyi Club, Lagos is a passionate golfer who has taken responsibility for a number of female golfers’ interest and progress in the game.
In her own contribution, the former Zonal Vice President, Remi Johnson, praised the rapid growth of the game among the ladies which she attributed to untiring efforts of the past and present leadership, insisting that the synergy has been all encompassing and exemplary.
“Our Zone has been setting the tone and won’t relent on the towering steps to be leader in the game and the quest to be best among its other pairs has been the ultimate spirit behind the innovations that have characterised LGAN Western Zone cardinal programmes. Reece and her executives have kept the flag flying even higher,” she started.
The event which attracted some bigwigs and sponsors of the Zone’s Open Championship unveiling saw one of the sponsors, Ecobank’s Zonal Segment Head, Lagos and South West, Chinwe Ekejiuba pledging the institution’s desire to encourage younger and talented female golfers to live their dreams. She added that LGAN Western Zone has been proactive in her efforts to grow the game among the female folk and assured that Ecobank in her usual sporting manner is ready to partner with them.
“LGAN Western Zone, on behalf of our dynamic and innovative character, be rest assured of our support, experience and indeed would extend our caring customer care relationship to build this vital category of the game with them,” Ekejiuba said.
In the same vein, Conference Hotel and Suites Sagamu and Ijubu Ode, Front Office Manager, Idris Afegbua said the hospitality outfit is there for the asking for LGAN Western Zone. Hospitality industry and sports all over the globe have proved over the years to be genuine partner in progress.
“On behalf of Conference Hotels and Suites, let me restate that our doors are wide open for you and your sporting activities. We are here to serve you better for the good of the game and for the players participants and sundry,” he reassured.
Other sponsors are Lafarge, Amarula Cream- the spirit of Africa drink among others.
It would be recalled that the LGAN Western Zone Open is the flagship tournament for Lady Golfers in this part of the country.
