Over 270 young athletes from 20 schools participated in the 2026 Discovering Tomorrow’s Star talent hunt programme at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, Edo on Thursday.
The athletes won medals in athletics, judo, karate, kung fu, wrestling, taekwondo, boxing, and kickboxing.
Executive chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele, said the event was not only about winning medals but an opportunity to believe in themselves, showcase their abilities, and begin their journey to greatness.
He said, “We are proud to have 20 schools participating in this historic event, with over 270 young athletes competing in athletics, judo, karate, kung fu, wrestling, taekwondo, boxing, and kickboxing.
“To all the young athletes here today, I want you to understand something very important: this competition is bigger than winning medals. This is your opportunity to believe in yourselves, showcase your abilities, and begin your journey to greatness.
“Today is not just about sports. It is about hope, preparation and development of our minds for greater opportunities ahead of future challenges and better tomorrow of sports in Edo State.
“This programme was carefully designed to take our grassroots sports development crusade closer to the people at all levels, to identify hidden talents within our schools and communities and to provide the platform for them to shine.
“Some of the world’s greatest athletes started from platforms just like this. The next national champions, African champions, Olympians, or world champions could be standing among you here today.
“It takes the combined efforts of all the stakeholders – the sports administrators, coaches, education institutions, parents and good neighbours to discover talents, encourage same and nurture them to stardom.”
