2026 WTT Contender Lagos serves off

By Daily Sports Nigeria on May 19, 2026

Top table tennis stars from Denmark, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France and Nigeria will begin vying for the $100,000 prize pool at the 2026 WTT Contender Lagos, which begins on Tuesday (today) at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

About 130 players from 20 countries make up the elite contingent set to compete at the 2026 WTT Contender Lagos.

The top seed among the players is men’s singles defending champion and current World No. 17, Anders Lind of Denmark, while women’s singles champion Honoka Hashimoto of Japan is also back in Nigeria to defend her title.

Since its debut in 2023, the WTT Contender Lagos has never witnessed a successful title defence, but that record could be challenged this year as the tournament returns from May 19 to 24.

According to the chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Adesoji Tayo, the tournament has become a showcase of elite-level table tennis in Africa, which will positively impact players in Nigeria and across the continent.

“This is the first Contender tournament after the ITTF World Team event, and, for the first time, we have five top-20 players coming to Nigeria. We also have 30 top-100 players, so it promises a lot of fireworks,” Tayo said during the pre-event press conference on Monday.

“Hosting WTT is not just because we want to host; it is to help our players. They have the talent, and they have to test themselves against top players, so it is an opportunity to compete with elite players.”

The WTT Contender Series serves as a vital bridge between grassroots development and elite competitions such as WTT Champions.

It provides a pathway for players to earn ITTF World Ranking points and offers opportunities for emerging talent.

The Lagos tournament will feature men’s and women’s singles (32-player main draw per category), men’s and women’s doubles (16 pairs per category), and mixed doubles (eight pairs).
