The Super Eagles have expressed condolences following the death of former Nigeria international and 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner, Henry Nwosu, who died at the age of 62.
In a statement posted on its official X platform on Saturday, the national team commiserated with the family of the late midfielder, recalling his role in Nigeria’s historic triumph at the 1980 AFCON.
“We commiserate with the family of Henry Nwosu on his passing. A member of Nigeria’s historic squad that won the 1980 African Cup of Nations. Rest in peace!” the statement read.
PUNCH Online reports that Nwosu was the youngest member of the Green Eagles squad that won Nigeria’s first Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil in 1980, a feat that cemented his place in the country’s football history.
The Imo State-born midfielder was widely known for his vision, creativity and technical ability and later became a prominent figure in Nigerian domestic football.
Following his retirement from active football, the former international remained involved in the sport as a coach and mentor, helping to nurture younger players while sharing the experience he gained during his playing career.
His death was announced on Saturday by former teammate and fellow 1980 AFCON winner, Segun Odegbami, who disclosed that the ex-midfielder died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, after battling for his life in the hospital for five days.
