Former Inspector General of Police Ogbonna Okechukwu Onovo is among the top leaders of the Nigerian Police Force that left a significant history in security. He was born on 7 February, 1953 in Nkanu, Enugu State, Southeastern Nigeria. From childhood, Onovo has shown an interest in leadership, discipline and patriotism, what later appeared in his work in government.

He successfully graduated from University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) where he graduated from political science. This knowledge has helped him a lot in understanding politics, leadership and national security system.

In 1977, Ogbonna Onovo joined the Nigerian Police Force as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). From this stage, he started a journey full of challenges and diligence, where he served in different parts of the country, especially in the field of crime investigation, security and leadership.

Struggle and progress of work

During his years in the Army, Onovo has faced many challenges including:

Shortage of equipment in the army

Increase of crime in major cities

Number pressure from politics and internal conflicts

However, he stands firm and works with integrity, why he ascended to major positions such as Commissioner of Police (CP), Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), and Deputy Inspector-general of Police (DIG). In 2007, he once held the position of Acting Inspector-General of Police, which added to his experience in leading the entire army.

Resident Inspector-General of Police (IGP)

In July 2009, he was appointed as Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of Nigeria, a position he held until September 2010. This time has come in a critical state of security problems in this country.

During his presidency, IGP Onovo struggled strongly in the presence of:

Improving discipline and law enforcement among police officers.

Strengthening training and education to improve the skills of agents.

Improving community cooperation (community policing) for personal information and building trust

Remove major crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping and domestic violence

Trying to cleanse the troops from bad behavior such as bribery and unjust

He has also made an effort to strengthen cooperation between the police and other security agencies to protect the lives and property of citizens.

After Retirement

After completing his duty, IGP Onovo enters retirement with dignity and respect. Later, University of Nigeria, Nsukka awarded him an Honorary Doctorate for his contribution to national security and development of police work.

Finishing up with the end of the day

IGP Ogbonna Okechukwu Onovo was a patient, patient and patriotic leader, who sacrificed his life to the service of Nigeria. Despite the challenges he faced, his history has shown that he stood firm in improving police force and ensuring peace. His name will continue to be in the list of security leaders who have made a huge contribution to this country.
