Brentford’s Italian-born defender Michael Kayode has fuelled speculation about a potential switch of international allegiance to Nigeria after he followed the official Super Eagles page on Instagram, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The move immediately stirred social media discussions among Nigerian fans, many urging the 21-year-old to commit to his parents’ homeland after a string of impressive performances in the Premier League.
Kayode, born in Italy to Nigerian parents, starred in Brentford’s 3–2 victory over Liverpool, where his trademark long throw led to the opening goal.
His all-round display down the right flank earned him the Man of the Match award and widespread praise from pundits and supporters alike.
On Facebook and Instagram, Nigerian fans flooded comment sections calling for his inclusion in the national team. One user, @princeloyaly, wrote, “He should join the playoff so that Fredrick and Bassey will play CB and he plays RB.” Another, @officialayus, added, “Due to your performance against Liverpool, you’re truly welcome to the fullback position in the Eagles squad. Ola Aina will be on the leftback and you hold the right back for us.”
The excitement continued with @big_tino1402 urging the Nigerian Football Federation to act quickly, “Invite him now, the boy is in form. He has given you a signal. I am sure he is waiting for the invite. Super Eagles need fresh players who can play ball.”
Others echoed the sentiment. “He wants to play for us,” wrote @cornerkickhq, while @pboyblack_diamond commented, “I would like to see him in the Nigerian jersey. Man is good.”
Kayode’s performances have certainly captured attention. His long throw-ins, reminiscent of Rory Delap, have become a potent weapon for Brentford, consistently unsettling top Premier League defences.
ESPN previously noted how his deliveries against Manchester United “sparked panic” in the Red Devils’ backline earlier this season.
Brentford head coach Keith Andrews recently hailed Kayode’s character and professionalism, revealing how the youngster “blew everyone away with his personality” upon joining the club. After the Liverpool match, Andrews presented him with the Player of the Match award.
“I’m so happy about that, we did an amazing game,” Kayode said in his post-match speech.
“I want to say thank you to everyone, players and staff. We have to continue like that. I dream, I think everyone dreams that we can make an amazing season.”
Since joining Brentford, the Italian U-21 international has grown in stature, displaying composure, defensive discipline and attacking intent. Yet, despite representing Italy at youth level from U-18 to U-21, Kayode remains eligible to play for Nigeria at senior level.
His agent Claudio Vigorelli has also confirmed that major European clubs are monitoring the right-back.
“The Premier League is very physical, it seems custom-made for him. Michael is proving he fits perfectly. It’s early, but if he continues like this, something important will arrive for him,” Vigorelli told TuttoMercatoWeb.
Meanwhile, fans at home see more than just potential, they see a ready-made fit for the Super Eagles’ evolving backline. One commenter, @ricch_4l_ade, captured the growing sentiment: “Kayode Delap… this guy’s throw-in is a threat.”
If the momentum online is any indication, the Brentford defender’s next international decision could see him don the green and white of Nigeria sooner than expected.
It would be a remarkable coup, with Nigeria already boasting an impressive legacy of left-sided defenders, including Augustine Eguavoen, Celestine Babayaro, Ben Iroha, Ifeanyi Udeze, Taye Taiwo, Efe Ambrose and presently Ola Aina.
