Amaechi targets consistency at World Champs

By Daily Sports Nigeria on August 27, 2025

Nigerian discus thrower, Obiageri Amaechi, has revealed she is aiming for consistency as she continues preparations for the World Athletics Championships scheduled to take place in the Japanese city of Tokyo in September, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 26-year-old American born athlete, who recently secured an automatic qualification spot for the World Championships when she threw a mark of 64.80m at the Oklahoma Throws Series in Ramona, will be looking to win a maiden global medal for Nigeria when the biennial showpiece commences.

She revealed in an exclusive chat with PUNCH Sports Extra, “I feel great about my recent performance. I think it is a turning point for me and a sign of all there is to come. The focus of this athletic season has been to consistently execute my technical cues and I’m excited to build on this momentum.

“I’m confident that if I continue hitting the correct positions that I will consistently throw 60 meters. That is the goal for Tokyo and I pray that I will be able to achieve this,” Amaechi said.

Amaechi’s career has been steadily on the rise. She has represented Nigeria since 2022, after switching allegiance and has become one of the country’s leading throwers alongside African record holder Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons.

She won gold in the discus event at the 2023 African Games, as well as a bronze medal at both the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the 2022 African Championships, and also took part at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in France.
