Rivers United won’t make last season’s mistake – Finidi

By Daily Sports Nigeria on August 26, 2025

Rivers United coach Finidi George has vowed that his side will not repeat last season’s mistakes, after finishing runners-up to Remo Stars, as they set out in pursuit of the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League title, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Pride of Rivers kicked off the new season last Friday against the champions, earning a 1-1 draw at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena.

It was a good start for the 2022 champions, who extended their dominance over Remo Stars. They have won seven of their 11 previous meetings before Friday while Remo have only one win.

Before the game, Finidi reflected on their chances of challenging for the title this season after finishing seven points behind Remo Stars last term.

“We know what’s at stake, we know where we slipped last season. I don’t think we will make that mistake this season,” Finidi said.

“We will fight for every point. That’s our focus this season. So, pressure, I don’t think so but you know how the league is, we just pray for a good start. You know if you have that good start, it will propel the team to greater things.

“So, there is no pressure on my side but the club might be looking at what to do and how the results come. I believe with what we seen from the players, it’s going to work out well.”

Finidi, an ex-international, joined the Pride of Rivers last season after a short stint as the head coach of the Super Eagles.

Rivers United ended the last campaign with 64 points, seven points behind winners Remo Stars.
