My dictionary defines politician as “person engaged or interested in politics” and politics as “science and art of government; political affairs or life or principles etc.” Politics consists of “social relations involving authority and power”.
A politician is defined as one who is actively involved in politics or one who holds or seeks a political office. A politician is an individual who is involved in influencing public policy and decision making in government. Politicians play a central role in our lives.
They are the concentrated voices of the people that make all efforts to improve their constituencies and peoples’ welfare. Good and dependable politicians are delight to serve the people and consider themselves as servants and people their paymasters. They represent the hopes, aspirations and the interests of every citizen in the state.
In the Nigerian political framework, however, good and dependable politicians are hard to come by. From what Nigerians have witnessed and experienced since politicians came into relevance in 1999, it will be simply sardonic to describe the Nigerian politicians as servants of the people. It will also be criminal to assume that the Nigerian politicians represent the hopes, the aspirations and the interests of the people.
To describe the Nigerian politician as 'concentrated voices of the people that make all efforts to improve their constituencies and people's welfare' is laughable.
Successive politicians, over the years - from the President, to the Governors, to the Senators etc. - have all failed woefully to live up to the expectations of more than 200 million Nigerians on whose mandate they saw themselves in the corridors of power.
Be that as it may, the fact remains that there are still Nigerians who can be relied upon to make an impact, if and when they're given the opportunity to showcase the stuff they're made of. Such Nigerians are difficult to come across, but they exist.
One of such individuals is Honourable Engineer Philip Nwoye who is the Oshodi/Isolo 2 Candidate for New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) Lagos State House of Assembly in the February 2023 election.
Having been born and brought up in the Eastern part of Nigeria, Nwoye's enthusiasm took him to the Northern part of Nigeria where he lived for more than 15 years. Thereafter, the well-travelled engineer moved to Lagos where he has been living since the 90s. It will be an understatement, therefore, to imply that Engr. Nwoye represents the image of a united Nigeria.
Having witnessed an absurd era of politics - where ethnic and religious jingoists and apologists have held the nation by the jugular - it is appropriate to state that Nigerians don't need leaders who'll further widen their divides. That's where Engr. Nwoye holds the ace.
Seldom do you see a Nigerian politician going through the proper rudiments of getting a job. While looking for a job, for instance, candidates are supposed to package their CVs, lay bay their qualifications, enlighten their would-be employers about their competence and capabilities, and give reasons why they should be hired. That has been Nwoye's modus operandi, which gives him the edge over his opponents.
Engr. Nwoye is not the type of politician who has a skeleton in his cupboard. He is always handy to do justice to any question that comes up any time, any day. He is such that wants to clear the air over any controversial issue.
He insists that Nigerians should be able to ask political aspirants what is motivating them to run for office. Do they just want to be legislators, governors etc., by fire or by force, or they truly and honestly want to serve? Are they promising a bright future for you and I, for the older generation, for this generation, for your children and children's children? Do they represent the future generation?
These are questions Nigerians have failed to ask the politicians who are masquerading themselves as representing them over the years. These are questions that Engr. Nwoye is readily available to answer at any given time.
"We must be able to look at those we are choosing to represent us in their faces, and ask them poignant questions. We must be bold to confront them and insist that they show us their blueprint. If they cannot convince us,if they are not politicians with the right character, ability and the competence to turn things around, we discard them," Engr. Nwoye insisted.
Asked why he chose to tow the line of politics when Nigerians have relatively lost hopes in Nigerian politicians, he was emphatic in stating that he decided to take the dive in order to make a remarkable statement.
"The politicians who have been sent out to represent us in different areas have represented us poorly. Little surprise it made many of us start losing hope in these politicians. It has also made the electorate believe that their votes don't even count. That even when their votes count, the people they're sending there, don't even represent them well.
"Among the youth who have been complaining bitterly about the reckless and clueless antecedents of these politicians is my humble self. It was a very tough decision to come out and contest the forth-coming election. In choosing to , I decided to make an indelible statement. I'm here to make a remarkable difference. I'm here to leave my footprints in the sands of time."
Engr. Nwoye poured encomiums on the officials of NNPP who found him worthy and picked him among thousands of his opponents to fly their flag. "I thank God for the inspiration and the resilience. I also appreciate the noble men and women that make up the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) . I lack words to express my gratitude to this great party for finding me worthy to be their flag bearer in the forth-coming election."
