Sunderland manager, David Moyes is unsure if his Nigerian striker, Victor Anichebe will be fit enough for Monday’s English Premier League clash against Liverpool.
Anichebe limped off in first-half injury time in the Black Cats’ 4-1 mauling at Burnley and faces a potentially lengthy spell on the side lines.
The Nigerian striker picked up the injury when giving chase to George Boyd as the Clarets counter-attacked after clearing a Black Cats free-kick.
Moyes hinted that Anichebe may have injured his hamstring in the game.
“Victor (Anichebe) has pulled his hamstring.
"I’ve not checked with the medical team as yet how bad or good it is at the moment, so we’ll just have to see how he is," Moyes said shortly after the game on Saturday.
There was more news to come from the Sunderland camp on the Nigerian striker’s situation 24 hours later.
Moyes was quoted on the club’s official website on Sunday evening explaining that it is still not clear if Anichebe will be ready to face the Reds on Monday.
“I don’t know exactly what the injuries to Lamine (Koné) and Victor (Anichebe) are. Lamine got a blow and Victor’s looked like a hamstring so that would rule him out if that’s the case.
“We had a couple of players who weren’t ready to play against Burnley – Steven Pienaar and Jack Rodwell – but we wanted to include them and get them ready for some of the games coming up.
“Let’s hope they can get themselves in a good condition and get ready to play some minutes.
Anichebe limped out of Turf Moor and, given the nature of such problems, his recovery time could be around four weeks-plus.
The 28-year-old striker has netted three times in ten league appearances for Sunderland this season. (supersport.com)
