AfroBasket: D’Tigers face tricky Tunisia test

By Daily Sports Nigeria on August 15, 2025

Nigeria’s senior men’s team, D’Tigers, will continue their mission to win a second continental title when they file out against the defending champions and three-time winners, Tunisia, in their second round-robin fixture on Friday (today) at the 2025 FIBA Men’s AfroBasket championship in Angola, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 2015 champions, who are seeking to end a 10-year trophy drought, had begun their AfroBasket campaign with a convincing 77-59 victory over Madagascar on Wednesday.

Pivotal during that clash was Caleb Agada, who scored a game-high 22 points to lead Nigeria to a resounding win, while veteran Stan Okoye also chipped in with a double  – figure points haul.

However, when the coach Mohammed Abdulrahman led side square up against the Tunisians at the Pavilhao Multiusos de Luanda, they will be taking on a team who suffered a stunning 86-65 defeat at the hands of the Indomitable Lions in their opening group stage game. The shock loss to Cameroon effectively ended Tunisia’s decade-long unbeaten run at the AfroBasket tournament.

Prior to Wednesday night, Tunisia’s last defeat in the tournament had come during the third-place fixture in the 2015 edition. Interestingly, that was the edition which saw the Nigerians emerge champions, as they laid claim to their first and only African title under the tutelage of William Voigt.

Tunisia may be without the duo of Makram Romdhane, who has retired and the absence of veteran Radhouane Slimane. However, they will count on the firepower of Jawhar Jawadi, who scored 16 points in the loss to Cameroon. His teammates, Mohamed Ochi and Omar Abada, also registered 12 and 11 points respectively.

With top spot still to fight for between both nations, a win for either side would go a long way towards securing an automatic spot in the quarter-finals of the quadrennial competition.
