Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has hinted that Victor Osimhen could face internal consequences following his heated on-field confrontation with teammate Ademola Lookman during Nigeria’s convincing 4–0 victory over Mozambique at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The incident occurred in the second half of Monday night’s Round of 16 clash, a game that sealed Nigeria’s place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
With the Super Eagles already cruising at three goals up, television cameras captured a tense exchange between Osimhen and Lookman. Both players appeared visibly upset as they traded words on the pitch.
Shortly after the altercation, Osimhen gestured to the bench, requesting to be substituted. Coach Chelle responded by bringing on Paul Onuachu in his place.
The drama continued even after the final whistle. The Galatasaray striker headed straight down the tunnel, opting out of the post-match celebrations with his teammates.
Speaking during his post-match press conference, Chelle declined to go into details about the incident but made it clear the matter would be addressed within the team.
“What happened on the pitch will stay in the group,” the coach said.
“I don’t need to tell you what will happen. I’ll keep that to myself.”
The clash came despite Osimhen enjoying an impressive outing. Nigeria dominated the contest early on, with Lookman scoring once and providing two assists for Osimhen’s brace, taking the striker’s tally to three goals in the tournament.
However, tensions boiled over midway through the second half after a promising attacking move broke down. Osimhen appeared frustrated, shouting at Lookman, seemingly unhappy over a delayed pass.
As he made his way off the pitch, sections of the crowd expressed their displeasure, booing the striker following his substitution request.
