Rivers United attacker, Onyekachi Okafor believes his breakthrough goal against Ikorodu United will open the floodgates as he looks to inspire the Port Harcourt club to an unlikely Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title.
The former Warri Wolves striker netted the second goal as Rivers United overcame Ikorodu United 2-0 in a rescheduled NPFL game in Port Harcourt last Friday.
Okafor who made his Rivers United debut against champions, Enyimba says he believes the good habit of goalscoring will continue following his ability to take the monkey off his back with his strike against Ikorodu United.
“It felt good to score because I waited for the goal for a very long time.
“At a stage, I was beginning to lose my confidence because the goals were not coming but the coach (Stanley Eguma) as well as my teammates encouraged me to continue fighting and working hard.
“That’s why I celebrated so much when I eventually scored because all the hard work finally paid off,” said the striker of his headed goal off an Idris Aloma cross.
Okafor will hope to get another chance to impress with yet another goalscoring contribution when United take on Heartland in the NPFL on Wednesday.
The striker who was introduced as a substitute in the game against Ikorodu United knows the battle for first team places is intense but insists on taking his chances whenever he is presented with them.
“There are so many good strikers at the club but the important thing is always to be prepared when you are called upon, either as a starter or as a substitute.
“I am hoping that I score in that game against Heartland but the most important things is for the team to win.
“Personal landmarks are never as important as collective success for the football club,” he said.
