Nigeria’s sprint stars Favour Ashe and Iyanoluwa Bada emerged champions in the men’s and women’s 100m finals respectively on Day 2 of the MTN CHAMPS Continental Relays in Lagos, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Ashe, who had shown impressive form in the heats, powered to victory in 10.28s, finishing ahead of Chidera Ezeakor (10.38s) and Thankgod Igube (10.49s) to clinch the coveted men’s title at the Yabatech Sports Complex.

In the women’s final, Bada continued her dominance with a wind-assisted 11.30s (+2.6m/s) to secure the gold medal, while Flore-Julie Krakre and Janet Adesiyan settled for silver and bronze with times of 11.86s and 11.90s, respectively.

Six-time national champion Patience Okon-George maintained her supremacy in the women’s 400m, clocking a season’s best of 52.67s to claim victory ahead of Team MTN’s Miracle Donald-Uwem (55.10s) and Pemisire Adepoju Adedoyin (56.29s).

Former national champion Samson Nathaniel delivered a commanding performance in the men’s 400m final, crossing the finish line in 46.71s. Team MTN’s Benjamin Magaji equalled his personal best of 48.04s to secure second place, while Deji Sholotan completed the podium with a time of 48.31s.

The junior categories witnessed equally thrilling contests as John Caleb extended his unbeaten streak in the men’s 100m, claiming the title with a time of 10.45s. Qudus Akintoye (10.65s) and Abdulrahman Jimoh (10.75s) finished second and third respectively.

Team MTN dominated the junior women’s 100m final with a clean sweep of the medals. Lucy Nwankwo broke the 12-second barrier for the first time in her career, setting a personal best of 11.99s to claim gold. Teammates Mercy Ogbonna (12.16s) and Azeezat Muhammed Raji (12.18s) completed the podium, with all three athletes improving on their personal bests from the semifinals.

In the middle-distance events, Hamid Sambo claimed victory in the men’s 1500m with a time of 3:59.12, while Ronke Akanbi won the women’s race.

The field events produced surprise results as Rukevwe Godsgift Nwagbowu upset favourite Ibukun Daramola in the men’s long jump with a winning leap of 7.47m. Daramola managed 7.39m in his final attempt to secure second place, while Jeffrey Miracle took third with 7.25m.

Mary Adeniran set a new personal best of 6.14m to clinch the women’s long jump title, with Glory Jarrett and Precious Okoronkwo finishing second and third respectively.

The two-day competition, held across Yabatech and Unilag Sports Complexes, showcased Nigeria’s emerging athletic talents and established stars, reaffirming MTN’s commitment to grassroots sports development in the country.
