The National Sports Commission has confirmed that 6,382 athletes and officials will participate in the 2025 National Youth Games, scheduled to take place in Asaba, Delta State, from August 29 to September 6, 2025, The PUNCH reports.

The figure was finalised following the conclusion of the Digital Registration Management process, which covered all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the NSC, the turnout reflects both the growing scale of the Games and the central role the competition continues to play in developing Nigeria’s next generation of athletes.

The breakdown of registered participants shows that 4,961 athletes will compete across disciplines, supported by 635 coaches, 386 team officials and 400 state delegates.

However, Gombe State has yet to finalise DRM procedures for its 74-member delegation, though organisers said their inclusion will not affect the overall tally of 6,382 confirmed participants.

A total of 37 sporting events will be contested during the nine-day competition, ranging from athletics, football and basketball to lesser-profile disciplines aimed at widening participation and talent discovery.

Defending champions Team Delta, who have traditionally dominated the Games, will again start as favourites on home soil.

But they are expected to face stiff competition from contingents representing Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Edo and other states determined to end Delta’s supremacy.

The NSC described the Games as more than just a contest for medals, stressing their role in promoting unity, discipline and resilience among Nigerian youth.

“The National Youth Games remain a celebration of talent, determination and national pride,” the commission said in a statement.

“This year will once again provide a platform for the stars of the future to showcase their abilities, while also strengthening the bonds that unite our country.”

Since its inception, the Youth Games have served as a launchpad for athletes who later represented Nigeria at continental and global competitions.

Organisers say this year’s edition will build on that legacy, with scouts, coaches and administrators expected to closely monitor performances for future national team selection.

With final preparations under way in Asaba, attention now turns to the opening ceremony on August 29, which will officially kick off nine days of competition, spectacle and the pursuit of glory.
