Nigeria international Victor Osimhen is reportedly keen to make the switch to Manchester United during this summer’s transfer window as the 26-year-old prepares to leave Napoli on a permanent basis, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
According to TEAMtalk, the Super Eagles striker is ‘greatly appreciative’ of the interest from the 20-time English champions, who have emerged as frontrunners for his signature ahead of several other European heavyweights.
Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Turkish giants Galatasaray, has been in scintillating form this season, netting 20 goals and providing five assists in 27 appearances across all competitions, enhancing his reputation as one of Europe’s most lethal forwards.
The Nigerian international is expected to be available for approximately £62m (€75m) due to a release clause in his contract, making him an attractive proposition despite significant interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Arsenal.
Manchester United’s interest comes as manager Ruben Amorim looks to address his side’s goalscoring woes, with current striker Rasmus Hojlund enduring a nightmare campaign that has seen him score in just two Premier League games since December.
Reports suggest the Red Devils could include the struggling Danish forward in a potential swap deal with Napoli, offering approximately £33m (€40m) plus Hojlund, though fresh reports indicate United might be prepared to trigger Osimhen’s release clause outright.
According to Nigerian journalist Buchi Laba, Arsenal have also made official contact with Osimhen’s camp last week and are prepared to trigger his release clause as they search for a clinical striker to complement their attacking options.
Despite the swirling speculation, Osimhen has remained coy about his future, telling journalists in February after Galatasaray’s goalless draw against Fenerbahce; “To be honest, I don’t know. A few months ago, nobody thought I would come here.
“I never believed I would come to a club as big as Galatasaray. For me, I live for the moment. We will see what is going to happen in the summer and I want everybody to understand that I love this club so much and everyone associated with the club.”
The Galatasaray loan star has not ruled out extending his stay with the Turkish club, who reportedly had a €65m bid rejected by Napoli earlier this year. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has remained firm that any interested club must meet the striker’s full €75m release clause.
If he does make the move to Old Trafford, Osimhen would bring an impressive goalscoring pedigree, having netted 76 goals in 133 appearances for Napoli before his loan move to Turkey. His Champions League record is equally impressive, with nine goals in 17 outings in Europe’s premier club competition.
It’s expected to be a busy summer at Old Trafford, with reports suggesting United want as many as four new signings. As well as a centre-forward, they wish to sign a defensive midfielder, a centre-back and another wing-back.
