Female Yellow Greens captain Blessing Etim reached a milestone of 50 women’s T20 international game appearances for Nigeria at the ongoing 2024 World Cup qualifiers in Uganda on Sunday, The PUNCH reports.
Nigeria however lost the game by nine runs and Etim was poised for a spectacular innings with 20 runs off just 11 balls before she was caught.
Nigeria won the toss and elected to field first and Namibia posted 122 runs for the loss of two wickets in 20 overs, leaving the Female yellow Greens to chase 123 runs to win the game.
The Female Yellow Greens however didn’t start their innings brightly until Peculiar Agboya and Lucky Piety hit the crease and posted Nigeria’s best batting figures. Agboya had 24 runs from 27 balls as well as three boundaries before she was bowled out while Piety’s 43 runs from 49 balls and five boundaries before she was ran out earned her the Nigeria Cricket Federation Player Of The Match Award.
Christabel Chuwkuonye also made her debut for Nigeria in the nail-biting defeat.
“Honestly, it would have been a big day for me and for the team with a win. However, I’m happy and grateful to God for bringing me this far, words cannot express how grateful I am,” Etim told The PUNCH after the game.
“We had a good start but it’s just unfortunate we didn’t win, but I’m proud of the players we all did our best,” she added.
In the second Group B game on Sunday, host Uganda overran Rwanda by six wickets to go joint top with Namibia.
Nigeria’s next game is against Rwanda, on Tuesday.
