Six years after the death of former Nigerian footballer, Promise Isaac, the ex-Flying Eagles captain is still promising success on the pitch for the West African giants, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
His 16-year-old son, Isaac Isaac, currently in the ranks of Atlanta United Academy in the United States, is reveling from the heart of the defence to the midfield in the U-16 squad and may very well carry his father’s mantle in due time.
In a Biblical reference, in the book of Genesis, the name of the promised son to Abraham and Sarah was also Isaac.
A video compilation of the youngster, which is over three minutes hit the internet earlier this week, displaying his qualities and refreshing the memories of Nigerians about his late father – although Isaac doesn’t play the same position as his father. They do have similarities in celebrations, composure and on-ball technique.
While his father was a striker or better still a supporting striker, as he appeared in most of his games at the U-20 level, Isaac plays as a defender, primarily at the centre and secondarily as a right back.
He also thrives in the defensive midfield role.
Although his video reminded Nigerian football enthusiasts that the former Flying Eagles star has a son who is on the path to becoming a professional footballer and fulfilling promises, it is also worthy of note that the lad holds three citizenships.
According to his profile on the video, Isaac is eligible to play for Nigeria, the USA and Turkey.
As seen in the video, the 16-year-old has a good ball-playing ability as a defender, helping his team play out from the back and stretching the opponents with accurate long passes as well.
Primarily as a defender, he puts himself in good positions for interceptions aside from his tight marking in 1v1 situations.
In the video, he scored four headed goals and also jubilated by somersaulting – one of the ways of his father during his active days.
His team, Atlanta United Academy competes in MLS NEXT competitions, as well as several tournaments and events throughout the year. In addition to these competitions, academy teams compete in a wide-ranging games program, to supplement league and tournament play.
As part of MLS NEXT’s fifth season which started last September, multiple changes were made to evolve the Pro Player Pathway.
Five of his teammates recently got call-ups for various national assignments and Isaac could well be on the radar for his talent as he is eligible to play for three countries.
Isaac’s father, Promise died of a heart attack in Austin, Texas in 2019.
He was Nigeria’s silver-winning team captain at the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup in the Netherlands as well as the Beijing Olympics Games in China. He earned three caps for the Super Eagles, scoring one goal.
