Amusan battles Ali, others in invitational tourney

By Daily Sports Nigeria on April 15, 2023

World champion Tobi Amusan will be eyeing her first title of the 2023 athletic season at the Tom Jones Invitational in Florida on Saturday in the final of the Women’s 100m hurdles, Saturday PUNCH reports.

The Nigerian track and field sensation will compete in her first hurdles race of the year, as she will look to build on last year’s phenomenal success, which resulted in her setting a new world record at the World Championships in Oregon.

Amusan is also listed to compete in the 100m dash event in Florida as she works on perfecting her speed.

Despite not having competed in the sprint hurdles this season, Amusan is expected to make a quick start this weekend at the James G. Pressly Stadium in Gainesville. She will be up against formidable competition, including global medalists such as Bahamian athlete Devynne Charlton, who won a silver medal in the world indoor 60m hurdles, Nia Ali, a two-time indoor 60m hurdles world champion and 2019 world outdoor champion, and Jamaica’s Danielle Williams, who won the 2015 world championship title.

The Women’s 100m Hurdles Olympic Development Event promises to be a closely contested race and even though Amusan starts as the favorite, the battle for the title should be closely contested.

Amusan, a phenomenal athlete, has already made a name for herself in the world of track and field, where she holds many records, including the world, Commonwealth, African, and national records in the 100m hurdles event.

As a dedicated and passionate competitor, Amusan continues to push the limits of her abilities and inspire others with her breathtaking performances.

The Tom Jones Invitational is a major warm-up event for athletes getting ready for the competitive outdoor season.

With the World Athletics Championships a few months away, Amusan’s performance this weekend will provide valuable insight into her form and readiness for the upcoming global competition.

It is worth recalling that at last year’s Tom Jones Invitational, Favour Ofili, a 19-year-old in the 200m event, set a new national record of 21.96secs, breaking Blessing Okagbare’s 22.04secs record set in 2018.
