I didn’t lead Bayer Leverkusen, we led ourselves – Victor Boniface

By Daily Sports Nigeria on April 15, 2024

In a historic moment for the club, Bayer Leverkusen lifted the Bundesliga trophy for the first time in their 120-year existence, dethroning Bayern Munich’s 11-year reign with a resounding 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Sunday.

Xabi Alonso’s side knew a win would secure the title with five games to spare, and they delivered a dominant performance befitting champions, extending their remarkable unbeaten run to 43 games across all competitions.

Florian Wirtz’s hat-trick and goals from Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka sealed the triumph, but Boniface, whose goalscoring exploits have been pivotal to Leverkusen’s title charge, was quick to deflect individual praise.

“I no lead anybody ooo. We lead ourselves,” the Nigerian striker wrote on social media platform X Monday, emphasising the collective effort behind the club’s success.

Boniface opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 25th minute and later provided an assist for Xhaka’s goal, taking his tally to 11 goals and nine assists in just 18 Bundesliga appearances this season, despite missing four months due to injury.

Alonso said, “This is a very special moment for the club. Winning the Bundesliga for the first time in 120 years is something very special. The players are top. I am very proud of everyone.”

With the Bundesliga title now secured, Leverkusen have the opportunity to become the first side to go unbeaten in an entire Bundesliga campaign, and they remain in contention for an unprecedented treble, with the DFB-Pokal and UEFA Europa League still up for grabs.
