Egyptian football legend Essam El Hadary has officially announced his retirement from the game at the age of 47.
El Hadary started his professional career in 1993 and became the oldest player to feature at the FIFA World Cup when he played for the Pharaohs in Russia two years ago.
In total, he won four Africa Cup of Nations titles and three CAF Champions League crowns in an illustrious career which has engraved him as one of Africa’s best goalkeepers ever.
“Football is my second wife and I have divorced it. I am not returning to play football again, the entire system has errors and club heads attacking each other,” El Hadary said after announcing his retirement during a television interview as reported by KickOff.com.
“There is nothing to add to my footballing history. There is no goalkeeper in Egypt better than me. I only sat on the bench in 1998 for goalkeeper Nader El-Sayed.”
In total, El Hadary won 159 caps for Egypt while he spent most of his professional career on the books of Al Ahly. (African Football)
