Bad weekend for Lagos teams in the top flight; Ikorodu fall at home, MFM lose away

By Adeyinka Akintunde, Lagos on March 21, 2016

It was a sad weekend for Lagos football fans as the state’s two representatives in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) lost their games.

Playing at their home ground, Onikan Stadium, Ikorodu United lost 1-2 to Giwa FC of Jos, while Mountain of Fire and Miracles Football Club (MFM FC) lost 0-1 to hosts Heartland FC of Owerri.

At Onikan, Giwa took the lead in just five minutes through David Sunday. Ikorodu United equalised on 17 minutes through Ifegwu Ojukwu. The goal meant that Giwa have failed to keep a clean sheet in 18 consecutive away matches. The Plateau side from Jos had their goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke to thank for the massive save he made on 45 minutes to deny the home team a lead.

The second half began with Ikorodu United again having possession but Giwa soon charged forward in search for a winner, which came on 85 minutes when Amos Gyang scored off a beautiful free kick.

Elsewhere in Owerri, Imo State, MFM surrendered the full three points at stake after Fortune Omoniwari scored on 31 minutes, upon receiving an assist from Ajoku.
