Plateau Utd’s lead cut to two points

By Daily Sports on July 17, 2017

Plateau United suffered a set-back in their quest to emerge champions of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on Sunday as they lost 0-1 to Niger Tornadoes at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja.

Samuel Agba converted a fourth-minute penalty for the hosts to send Kennedy Boboye’s charges back to Jos empty handed.

United still remain top of the NPFL table with 51 points from 29 matches but their lead over the chasing pack has been cut to just two points after MFM FC won 1-0 over Wikki Tourists at the Agege Stadium, Lagos.

Stephen Odey scored the decisive goal for MFM and he is now the clear leader in the top goal scorers’ charts with 17 strikes.

Akwa United moved into the continental places after a brilliant 3-0 win at home to Gombe United.

All three goals of the hosts were scored in a frantic second half with Musa Newman, Alhassan Ibrahim and Christian Pyagbara providing the vital contributions to send the home faithful at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo into raptures.

El-Kanemi Warriors are fourth, with goals difference separating them and the fluid-playing Akwa in the race for the continental places.

The Maiduguri club won 1-0 against Abia Warriors courtesy of a penalty converted by in the 30th minute by Matthais Samuel.

Head coach of El-Kanemi Warriors, Ladan Bosso described the win as "easy".

“This was one of the easiest games we have played this season,” he told supersport.com.

“My goalkeeper was on holidays for the most part and it was not as difficult as the games we played (in Maiduguri) against clubs like Plateau United and Rivers United,” he said.

There was a five-goal free-for-all in Makurdi with Lobi Stars relying on an 84th minute Uchenna Eze strike to win by the odd goal in five at the Aper Aku Stadium against a spirited Remo Stars battling to survive the drop. (Supersports)
