Nigerian athletes jostle for NCAA Division One indoor titles

Nine top athletes from Nigeria will be vying for honours in the colours of their respective schools, as the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Indoor Championships takes centre stage at the Virginia Beach Sports Centre, Virginia, USA, this weekend, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 2025 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships will be the 60th edition for the men and the 43rd for the women.

The field will consist of 17 different men’s and women’s indoor track and field events with a total of 650 participants contesting from Friday, March 14 (today) till Saturday, March 15.

Among the 650 athletes are nine top Nigerian athletes who hope to end their collegiate indoor season on a high before heading to China for the World Indoor Championships.

African Games bronze medallist, Prestina Ochonogor, who is in her first year, will begin the hunt for medals in the women’s long jump final on Friday.

The women’s 400m preliminary event will also see Ella Onojuvwevwo in action while the duo Success Umukoro and Tima Godbless will hope to make it into the women’s 60m final.

Paris Olympics semi-finallists, Kanyinsola Ajayi, Adekalu Fakorede and Israel Okon will also compete in the men’s 60m.

New African indoor record holder in the 400m, Ezekiel Nathaniel will also hope to reign supreme in the men’s 400m which he has dominated since the start of the season.

While most of the athletes will hope to advance into the finals on Saturday, national record holder in the women’s high jump, Temitope Adeshina is billed to compete in the final on Saturday.

After the end of the collegiate indoor season, a few of the athletes will head to China for the World Indoor Championships which will be held from March 21 to 23 in Nanjing, China.
