MFM FC’s Sikiru Olatunbosun scored an early contender for the Nigeria Professional Football League’s Goal of the Season and describes it as one ‘made for the UEFA Champions League’.
The Olukoya Boys defeated Enugu Rangers 2-1 at the Agege Stadium on Friday.
With the game goalless, Chukwuka Onuwa and Stephen Odey combined to release Olatunbosun on the edge of the box. The striker then performed an audacious flick over an onrushing defender before volleying in from an awkward angle to put his side in front.
“I’m very excited because I did not expect this but it happened,” Olatunbosun told Goal.
“It is such a wonderful goal and goals like this are made for the UEFA Champions League and I believe that I’m still going to play there.
“There was nothing going through my mind. It was just the way I dribbled the defender that kept me in that [tight] position and there was no way to strike the ball,” he explained.
“It’s normal for us to practice goals such as this in training sessions. Like in our last training session before this match I was unable to score any goal in training but I assisted Stephen Odey, who got a hattrick [in training]. But against Rangers, I scored and he also got one.
“'I was very excited, very happy for the win because Rangers are a big side, they are the defending champions and we cannot look down on them because they are match fit unlike us that haven’t played for like two weeks.
“But at the end of this game we have three points so I give God the glory including my teammates.
“There are more matches and I’ll have chances to score more spectacular goals,” he concluded
