Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side Heartland have escaped the sledge hammer weighed on staff of 19 agencies, departments and parastatals by the Imo State Government.
The Naze Millionaires are among the 15 healthy agencies, departments and parastatals not affected by the mass sack of workers.
Government explained that the massive sack followed what it called ‘a productivity audit recently conducted in the parastatals, agencies and departments’.
The statement signed by the Secretary to the Government, Jude Ejiogu stated that “government is satisfied that it is no longer in the public interest to keep running these agencies, parastatals and departments with huge cost on public revenue and no value services to the public under the present economic realities.”
The government statement is certain to calm nerves at the NPFL side enmeshed in deep rooted controversy over the recent mass sack of workers carried out by the Task Force on Sports Facilities.
The Task Force chairman, Ugonna Ozuruigbo had on a termination of service letter dated December 1, 2015 notified the affected workers that their services would no longer be required and subsequently paid the workers the December salaries in lieu of notice.
The tenure of the Task Force was actually said to have elapsed on November 29, 2015 while the sack letters were issued on January 6, 2016 but back dated to December 1, 2015.
Ozuruigbo equally dissolved the Okey Ibe led management team shortly after curtain fell on the 2014/15 NPFL season and subsequently constituted an interim management board headed by Oscar Keke.
Heartland finished the out gone top flight on the seventh position on 56 points 14 points behind champions, Enyimba. ©supersport.com
