A sports organisation in Abuja, Youth for Peace and Unity Sport Initiative, has decorated and presented a trophy to His Royal Majesty, Eze Sir Maxwell Omerie Kanu, on the occasion of its National Unity Football Tournament, tagged Youth For Peace and Unity Cup 2016/2017.
Sir Maxwell, who is the owner and Managing Director of the first hotel in Abuja, Agura Hotel, stated in his remarks during the presentation, on Friday, that “I appreciate the youths for appointing me as a Patron and I am happy you identified that I have a role to play in the life of Nigerian youths. I keyed into this project because I am a lover of sporting activities and you cannot take away sport away from me. I still do all what a man does in sporting. Even, as an 84 years old man.”
He added: “I am involved in many sporting organisations in the country and happy with that. Today, I am no longer seeking for favour but to help youths who can embark in sporting activities like football, basketball, Tennis and the rest.”
While advising the youths on the essence of sports in engendering national unity, he encouraged them to maintain same line of action and all should work towards the unity of sport in the country.
“Nothing must allow you to go astray from this unity. Be united in mind also and not be divided in heart. Through unity we can forge ahead as a nation, and that is what the leaders have to understand,” he added.
Speaking earlier during the presentation, President of the organisation, Comrade Ambassador Moses Ebahor, remarked that “this is the second edition that we are doing. The first one was held last year in Tafawa Balewa stadium, Bauchi.”
He added that the organisation has deemed it fit to give honour to whom honor is due and “as a father to us, we expect him to, from time to time, give us his royal blessings in terms of support and connections, to assist the tournament.”
“As a sport organisation, we have coordinators in all the states but he is the first person we are giving this award to and honoring. And this is principally because government is not ready to support us. We are supporting ourselves by funding our events,” he added.
