President of Super Eagles Supporters Club (SESC), Prince Vincent Okumagba, has joined his voice numerous others that want the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to renew the contract of Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr, to ensure continuity, cohesion, harmony and present existing understanding in the team.
He made the appeal in an exclusive discussion with Daily Sport that the Franco-Germany sweat merchant has proved his hard work and knowhow on the team since he first joined the former African Champions.
According to him, he has oftentimes said countless number of times that NFF executive committee board should renew his contract way forward. “Yes, Rohr may not be the best coach around but for now you cannot ignore his influence and control of the team (Super Eagles). For instance, he suppressed the target, set for him by the NFF so far he has met. It is not hidden that he qualified us for the World Cup and AFCON with games to spare. He won bronze in the last AFCON held in Egypt,” he recalled.
The SESC supremo further recalled that it is true that the country has won even gold in the past with a local coach but the million naira question is how many of such local coaches do we have around now? As he insisted that we get down well with him as the NFF starts talks with the white man.
He pointed out that talk of the stability in the team right now remains superb. His words: “Talk of the infusion of young and fresh legs in the squad and observe critically how the team has been cohesively fussed in nicely a process that would near perfection as he continues his mission in the senior national team outfit. I am appealing to the NFF look deeply and go ahead with the coach with the Super Eagles if only to avoid distraction that may prove dangerous if we try otherwise.”
Okumagba added that AFCON qualifiers have resumed recalling that in the first two matches played so far, Rohr has won on both home and away matches. “So I believe he can improve by winning major tournaments for the country if he’s well-handled given the right environment. Let me remind us that failure to renew his contract will no doubt put our qualification ambition which looks upbeat today for this major competition in danger. Therefore my candid advice is that his contract should be renewed with a mandate and target as all other grey areas we were told missed in the first contract so we can move on,” he said.
