Chairman of Delta State Swimming Association, Chief Mrs. Chinonye Daphey, says the state is ready for the February 16-19 President Buhari National Youth Open Water Swimming Championship.
In an exclusive interview with Daily Sports on Sunday, the swimming administrator assured of the state’s readiness to compete in the maiden edition of the Swimming Championship.
According to her, even if the championship is to start today, Delta is ready to compete and to emerge champions as usual.
“What will I say than to tell you that we are ready for the maiden edition of President Buhari National Youth Open Water Swimming Championship which is to take place on 16-19 February in Jabi, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory,” She stated.
“I want to assure you that even if the championship is to take place today, we are ready. We are ready to compete for laurels like every other state that will be participating in the first ever President Buhari Open Water Swimming Championship.
“Of course, you are aware of what Delta is capable of doing in swimming in particular in this country and in sports in generally.
“We will be competing to make history as usual. Our goal is to ensure that we emerge the overall champions of the championship next month. We have not been preparing for this championship to make up the numbers but to win it at the end of the day because that is our tradition,” Aliu declared.
Speaking on the state’s sporting calendar, Aliu said that the state has a lot of sporting activities both internally and nationally lined up for the year. She disclosed that there is going to be sports championship for the entire state where every sport will be competed for.
She put the date of the state-wide sports championship on February 29 to March 4, even as she enjoined The Oracle Today Sports to come over to witness the sporting potential of the oil-rich state.
“To prove to you that we have a lot of sporting activities lined up this year, we are going to have a championship for the entire state from February 28 – March 4. The championship will involve all sports. It is not restricted to swimming.
“You know the nature of Delta State. We don’t normally have one single venue for our events. There are three venues designated for the state sports fiesta and they include Warri Township Stadium for sports like swimming and others, Oghara and Ozoro stadia. Each of these venues will serve a senatorial zone.
“So, the state is going to be a beehive of sporting activities and we would love to see you when this championship kicks off on the 28 February to 4th of March, so that you will be able to witness firsthand the sporting potential of Delta State,” Aliu requested.
