The Nigeria Premier Football League has confirmed that the 2025/26 season will conclude on May 24, with chief operating officer Davidson Owumi insisting the campaign remains firmly on schedule despite fixture adjustments linked to the President Federation Cup, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Owumi explained on Tuesday that the league calendar was carefully structured in collaboration with the Nigeria Football Federation Competitions Department at the start of the season, with designated breaks built in to accommodate the Federation Cup and avoid the disruptions that have affected previous campaigns.

According to him, the system has been consistently implemented since January, ensuring what he described as a more organised and predictable schedule.

“We synergised with the NFF Competitions Department at the start of the season to create windows for the Federation Cup.

It has been in effect since January and we are running our calender as designed,” Owumi stated in a press release from the league body.

Matchday 36 fixtures will now take place on May 3, with matchday 37 set for May 10.

Another break will follow on May 16 and 17 to allow for the Federation Cup window, before the final round of matches on May 24 brings the season to a close.

Owumi said the planning process required close cooperation with clubs across the league, stressing that maintaining fixture integrity had been a key priority throughout the season.

“We have been intentional to maintain fixture fidelity and it took a lot of planning and cooperation from the clubs to achieve this,” Owumi said.

The confirmation comes as the league observes a short break to allow clubs participate in the ongoing President Federation Cup at state level, with teams temporarily stepping away from league action to fulfil domestic cup obligations.

The Federation Cup, which runs across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, continues its state-level phase before representatives advance to the national stage, where NPFL and Nigeria National League sides enter the competition.

The structured pause is part of broader efforts by football authorities to ensure fixture compliance and reduce congestion, with strict sanctions already outlined for clubs that fail to honour Federation Cup commitments.
