The Benin Club Golf Section, Edo State, came alive on Wednesday as over 250 professional and amateur golfers converged for the Ignatius Aigbokhaode Invitational Golf Tournament.
The event teed off on Wednesday with the caddies and eaglets, while professional golfers are scheduled to take centre stage on Thursday as the tournament builds towards its climax on Saturday.
The four-day competition is being held in honour of Ignatius Aigbokhaode, widely known as IG, as he marks his diamond jubilee.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Organising Committee, Andrew Momodu, described the tournament as a fitting tribute to a man whose friendship, leadership, and love for golf have brought players together for decades.
“Thursday’s event will feature professionals and others across Nigeria, while Friday’s event will feature men’s handicap 13–28, ladies handicap 19–36, veteran and super veterans,” he said.
He added that “Saturday is the grand finale, whereby men’s handicap 0–12, ladies hcp 1–18, invited guests and special guests will have their rounds on the course.
“Presentation of prizes to winners across all categories is slated for 6 pm, while entertainment follows after.”
Momodu further disclosed that the tournament is featuring golfers from Ogunnu Golf Resort, Ibori Golf and Country Club, Asaba; Sapele Athletic Golf Club; UBTH Golf Club, Benin City; Ikoyi Golf Club, Lagos; Port Harcourt Golf Club; Arsenal Golf Club, Owerri; IBB Golf and Country Club, Abuja, and several others.
“We are using the medium to announce that the IG @ 60 birthday at BCGS will be loud and clear,” he added.
The tournament blends top-level competition with camaraderie, turning the course into a festival of skill, sportsmanship, and celebration of Aigbokhaode, a former captain of the club.
Players will compete across multiple categories in an event designed to reflect IG’s passion for golf and his years of impact within the game and beyond.
