NCF proposes elite cricket league

By Daily Sports Nigeria on April 23, 2026

The president of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Uyi Akpata, has revealed plans to introduce an elite cricket league aimed at consolidating the country’s growing number of domestic competitions.

Akpata made this known on Sunday during the grand finale of the 2025/26 Club Cricket Committee Lagos League, held at the Tafawa Balewa Square Oval.

The announcement follows a successful season of the CCC League, which spanned about six months and featured competitions across the Premier League, Division One, 40 Overs, and Women’s League categories. The campaign reached its climax with Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association Cricket Club emerging champions of the top division.

They secured the title in emphatic fashion, defeating Rising Stars Cricket Club by 117 runs in a one-sided final to cap an impressive season.

Impressed by the standard of play and the continued expansion of the league, Akpata said the federation is now focused on raising the bar further with the introduction of a new elite competition, potentially as early as next month.

“Hopefully, depending on weather conditions, we will have an elite league in May,” Akpata said.

He also commended the organisers and participating clubs for delivering a highly competitive season, noting that the depth of talent on display would pose a significant challenge for national team selectors.

“Based on players’ statistics during the season, the coach and high-performance manager of the senior men’s team would have had a selection headache,” he added.

Beyond the CCC League, the federation continues to support other key domestic competitions across the country, including the South-South Female Cricket League, as part of its broader efforts to develop the sport and strengthen the national talent pipeline.
