Maiden Eagles call-up shocks Sor
By Daily Sports Nigeria on March 27, 2027
KRC Genk winger Yira Collins Sor has described his first call-up to the Super Eagles as a shock, revealing that he was watching Nigeria on television at the Africa Cup of Nations just two months ago and could never have imagined he would so soon be among the players pulling on the green and white jersey, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Sor, who is in camp with the squad in Antalya, Turkey, ahead of friendlies against Iran and Jordan, said the honour of representing over 200 million Nigerians was not something he intended to take lightly.
“It was really a shock for me to be very honest, but thank God for everything. To represent Nigeria, over more than 200 million people, is something I really see to be an honour. It’s a privilege that I must not take for granted, and I have to push to the maximum,” he said.
The Belgian Pro League winger reflected on just how quickly his fortunes had changed, recalling the emotions he felt watching Nigeria’s AFCON campaign from his television screen.
“Just two months ago, in the AFCON, I was watching the team on the television, and I was nervous. Every game they played, I was supporting the team, and two months later, I got a call-up to join this squad,” Sor said.
The 24-year-old also outlined what he hopes to contribute to Chelle’s side, describing himself as a direct and dynamic attacker who thrives on speed and combination play.
“I am a player with a lot of pace and a player that loves the link-up play. So I hope I can give this to the team, and together we can achieve more,” he said.
Sor’s inclusion is part of Chelle’s ongoing effort to broaden the Super Eagles’ attacking options and bring in fresh talent ahead of the next wave of competitive fixtures. The winger has prior experience at the youth level, having featured for Nigeria at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
He joins fellow debutants Emmanuel Fernandez and Philip Otele as new faces in the squad, with the trio adding youthful energy to a group that also includes experienced campaigners such as captain Wilfred Ndidi, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Ademola Lookman.
Nigeria face Iran on Friday (today) at 4pm Nigerian time before taking on Jordan on Tuesday, March 31, with both fixtures being played in Antalya following security concerns that led to the move from the originally planned venue in Amman.
