Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez has declared that he intends to seize his first international call-up with Nigeria and make an immediate impression at the Super Eagles camp in Antalya, Turkey, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The 24-year-old centre-back, who joined Rangers from Peterborough United last summer, was included in coach Eric Chelle’s 23-man squad for the international friendlies against Iran and Jordan and is in line to earn his first senior cap.
“The idea is to go in there and try and make my mark,” Fernandez said.
The Nigerian-eligible defender has had an impressive debut season in Scotland, scoring five goals and keeping 10 clean sheets in 25 appearances across all competitions, helping Rangers mount a title challenge in the Scottish Premiership.
His performances have not gone unnoticed beyond Scotland, with reports indicating that Arsenal have registered their interest in signing him. Chelsea, West Ham United, Everton, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and Club Brugge are also said to be monitoring the 6ft 6in centre-back, who can also cover at right-back.
Rangers, whose record sale remains Calvin Bassey’s £19.6 million move to Ajax in 2022, are understood to value Fernandez at around £35 million. The club are not in a rush to sell him, given that his contract runs until 2029, but would reconsider should a formal offer meeting their valuation arrive.
Fernandez is among several new faces in Chelle’s squad, joining winger Yira Sor and forward Philip Otele as players looking to make their senior international debuts during the Turkey camp.
Nigeria face Iran on Friday before taking on Jordan on Tuesday, March 31, with both games being played in Antalya following the move from the originally planned venue in Amman due to security concerns in the region.
