About 100 participants are already in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, for the maiden Ladies Golf Championship at the Ibom Icon Golf and Resort, scheduled to hold from Friday, March 27 to 28.
The Central Planning Committee Chairman, Mrs Aniekan Essienette, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Uyo on Thursday to highlight the tournament, themed ‘Bloom’.
She said 60 of the participants are women, while the rest are men, adding that veterans—participants aged 55 and above—will also feature at the event.
“We are expecting 100 participants in this tournament, which is the first of its kind. Out of these, 60 are ladies, while the rest are men,” she said.
Essienette noted that aside from the prizes to be won, the competition is aimed at inspiring prospective female golfers and showcasing the talent and resilience of women in a male-dominated sport.
She also thanked the sponsors of the tournament, including Hensek Engineering Services, the Central Bank of Nigeria (through the Office of the Deputy Governor, Corporate Affairs), Ibom Air, among others.
In his remarks, the Club Captain, Mr Isua Archibong, commended the ladies for their initiative in forming the female section of the club, recalling that 20 years after the establishment of the country club, they have taken the bold step to host the maiden tournament.
“I’m so proud of these ladies. When this club was established about 20 years ago, we didn’t have up to four ladies, and they were not even dedicated. Now, we have more women who are professionals in their endeavours and still make out time for this.
“Saturday is going to be a testament to the fact that the golfing community of Akwa Ibom has grown beyond being a male-only clubhouse,” he said.
Archibong also commended successive governors for their support to the club, and the present governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for sustaining a peaceful environment that has enabled the club to thrive, while advancing the state’s tourism drive as a golfing destination in Nigeria.
Also speaking, the Lady Captain, Maryann Cephas, said notable personalities from across the country are expected at the event, including the National President of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria, Mrs Lami Ahmed, alongside other executive members and representatives of clubs nationwide.
“The ladies have come together in a boom to put up this event. We will have in our midst the President of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria, Mrs Lami Ahmed, the Vice President, and about four other executive members,” she said.
On her part, the Head of Sales and Marketing at the Ibom Icon Resort, Idorenyin Ekong, said the facility is committed to delivering world-class hospitality during the tournament, expressing the hotel’s passion for supporting women.
Other speakers at the briefing, including the Group Manager, Corporate Affairs Services at Ibom Air, Imelda Abah; the team’s adviser, Lady Ime Edmund; and the Resident Head Professional and Golf Manager of the resort, also expressed optimism about the success of the tournament and commended the sponsors.
