Nigerian boxers Ayomide Mayowa and Faruk Abijuwon won gold medals at the 4th African Youth Games in Luanda, Angola, on Friday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Mayowa opened the gold medal haul for Nigeria when she defeated Algeria’s Bensallah Bouthania in the female 48kg final, before Abijuwon completed the double by overcoming Bofenda Mabela of the Republic of Congo in the male 50kg final.

The boxing finals brought activities to a close at the youth games, with both Nigerian fighters delivering commanding performances to claim top honours for their country.

Mayowa had earlier passed through host nation Angola’s Zola Lando in the quarter-finals on December 17, before overcoming Tunisia’s Queslati Tasnim in the semi-finals on December 18.

Abijuwon followed a similar path to glory, defeating Tunisia’s Salmane Kochbati in the quarter-finals, before seeing off Ghana’s Williams Laryea in the semi-finals to set up his gold medal bout.

The Nigeria Boxing Federation praised both fighters for their outstanding achievements, describing the performances as a proud moment for Nigerian boxing.

The NBF vice president, Omonlei Imadu, sent congratulations to both boxers and was elated after their success in Angola.

The double gold medal success has been hailed as a sign that the future of Nigerian boxing is shining bright, with both youngsters demonstrating exceptional skill and composure throughout the tournament.

Solomon Joshua also delivered a commendable performance, earning a well-deserved bronze medal after hard-fought contests against strong opponents. His resilience and determination added depth to Nigeria’s success at the Games.
