Ajayi focused after Diamond League wins

Nigerian sprint sensation Kayinsola Ajayi says he is staying grounded despite recording back-to-back victories in the Diamond League circuit over reigning world champion Oblique Seville.

Ajayi extended his remarkable run of form on Saturday by winning the men’s 100m at the London Diamond League in 9.84s, beating Seville for the second successive race after also finishing ahead of the Jamaican at the Prefontaine Classic earlier this month.

The 21-year-old equalled the Nigerian record for the third time this season as he held off Seville, who finished second in 9.87s, while Great Britain’s Romell Glave placed third in a personal best of 9.97s.

Rather than bask in the latest triumph, Ajayi said he was pleased with his consistency and remains committed to the process that has seen him emerge as one of the world’s fastest sprinters this season.

“I am doing the right things, I am keeping my focus, and I am really enjoying my running. I am happy with the race today,” Ajayi said after the race on Saturday.

The victory followed another statement performance in Eugene two weeks earlier, where Ajayi also clocked 9.84s to defeat Seville and American Christian Coleman in a star-studded field for the biggest win of his career.

Ajayi’s performances have underlined his consistency in a breakthrough season that has seen him establish himself among the world’s elite sprinters.

The Nigerian has now run 9.84 seconds on three occasions this year, in addition to his wind-assisted 9.72s at the NCAA Championships.

His latest Diamond League success also provides Team Nigeria with a major boost ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he is expected to spearhead the country’s medal challenge in the sprint events.
