Aruna ousted in Muscat contender opener

By Daily Sports Nigeria on November 21, 2025

Quadri Aruna’s campaign at the 2025 Muscat Contender came to an abrupt end on Thursday as he was defeated 3-2 by Romania’s Eduard Ionescu in a pulsating round of 32 encounter at the Sultan Qaboos Sport Complex, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Seeded ninth, Aruna received a bye in the round of 64 and entered the round of 32 with expectations of progressing further.

However, the 27th-ranked Nigerian could not overcome the 21-year-old Ionescu, ranked 44th in the world, who displayed remarkable composure in the decisive fifth game to secure a 12-10 victory.

The match, which lasted 32 minutes and 27 seconds, saw both players exchange momentum, with Aruna taking the second and third games 11-4 and 11-8 before Ionescu fought back to claim the fourth and fifth games 11-9 and 12-10 respectively.

Despite winning 47 points to Ionescu’s 46, Aruna fell short in critical moments.

Statistical analysis of the match showed near parity in service points, with Aruna winning 24 points on his serve compared to Ionescu’s 23.

Both players also won 23 points on their opponent’s serve. Aruna led at one point by seven consecutive points, but Ionescu’s resilience ensured the Romanian closed the gap and ultimately clinched the match.

Aruna’s exit leaves Omar Assar as the sole African remaining in the men’s singles competition.

The 34-year-old Egyptian advanced past Gyuhyeon Park of South Korea in the round of 32 and will face the first seed and world number seven, Felix Lebrun of France, in a highly anticipated clash in the next round.

Ionescu will now face fifth seed Woojin Jang on Friday (today) in the round of 16, aiming to extend his unexpected run at the $300,000 prize-money event, where a victory also carries 600 ranking points.

The round of 32 result earned Aruna $17,000 and 25 ranking points, which is a setback but not the end of his competitive season.
