A total of 160 students from 36 schools will participate in the second edition of the Ellen Olusola Caulcrick Foundation Unified Sports event on November 4 at the Igbobi College sports facility in Lagos.

The event, which brings together students with and without disabilities, aims to promote inclusion and foster understanding amongst young people from an early age.

Segun Caulcrick, a board member of the foundation and director of Olusoye Compensatory Centre, said the initiative seeks to cultivate compassion for children with disabilities and facilitate a gradual shift in societal attitudes.

“The idea is to start from a young age, to see other kids with disabilities as part of them and to accept them and support them as well. These are the kids who will impact society in the future, so starting from this age will help them understand compassion for other kids with disabilities,” Caulcrick said.

He added that the foundation’s aim is to see a society that accepts children with disabilities and for the government to create policies supporting those with special needs.

Mrs Olawunmi Subair, Lagos State Coordinator of Special Olympics Nigeria, said the 160 participants would comprise students from 24 government schools and 12 private schools, with four students from each school—two with disabilities and two without.

She noted that scouts from the Sports Commission would attend to identify high-potential athletes for advancement, adding that some participants are already in different vocations that the foundation works on advancing.

This year’s edition will feature six additional schools compared to last year’s maiden event and will include more sports for visually impaired athletes. Activities will include walking and running races, basketball, hoops games, football, egg races, filling the bucket, tug of war, and dancing competitions involving parents, teachers, and students.

All participants will receive medals, team t-shirts, gifts, lunch, and refreshments, whilst an overall winner’s trophy will be awarded. Transportation stipends will also be provided for coaches.

Top government officials from the governor’s office are expected to attend, although Caulcrick could not confirm whether the First Lady of Lagos State, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, who was the special guest of honour at last year’s event, would be present.

Caulcrick commended the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs for its efforts but noted there is room for improvement, particularly in direct support for families.

“In some cases, some parents lock the kids at home as they can’t afford to take them to school. If they have support from the government in terms of scholarships to schools that specialise in disabled students and support in terms of transportation to these schools,” he said.

The foundation has set a budget of N50m for the event and is seeking additional support from corporate organisations, particularly banks that already support people with disabilities.

Health professionals from Atlanta, Georgia, will also attend to conduct health checks for participating children.

The Ellen Olusola Caulcrick Foundation was established in June 2013 to honour the legacy of Mrs Ellen Olusola Caulcrick, a dedicated special educator, social worker, and passionate advocate for individuals with disabilities. The foundation’s mission is to empower and enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by promoting independence and self-sufficiency through education, training, and advocacy.

Caulcrick also revealed the foundation’s expansion plans, including a base in Epe, where land has been purchased to build a home for students with special needs.
