President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles on their emphatic 4–0 victory over the Cheetahs of Benin Republic.
He described the performance as a major boost to Nigeria’s quest for qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a statement signed on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the team’s hunger, passion, and determination during the match in Uyo, saying their superlative display had “reignited Nigerians’ football pride.”
“While the job is not yet complete, I join millions of Nigerian football fans in wishing our team every success in the playoffs,” Tinubu said.
The President noted that the national mood reflected a shared belief that Nigeria deserved a place at the 2026 World Cup, to be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
“As your President, I assure you and the coaching crew of the Federal Government’s support as you strive to secure your place at the tournament. Nigerians everywhere believe in you, and I do too,” Tinubu stated.
He urged the players and technical crew to sustain their momentum as they approach the decisive stages of qualification, adding that the government would continue to back efforts to ensure Nigeria’s return to football’s biggest global stage.
“We look forward to seeing you fly our flag proudly on the world stage,” the President said.
The Super Eagles’ victory in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State was one of their strongest performances yet in the string of World Cup qualifying matches.
Nigeria, a six-time World Cup participant, last missed out on qualification in 2022 after being held to a 1–1 aggregate draw by Ghana.
