Director of Dolphins Women’s Basketball Team, Olumide Oyedeji, has declared that the two-time Nigerian champions are now focused on the African Women’s Basketball League, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Lagos-based side secured their second Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League title in September, marking a historic achievement that ended a decade-long wait, and they will now represent Nigeria at the Zonal Qualifiers of the AWBL.
Oyedeji, a former DA’Tigers captain and one of Nigeria’s most experienced basketball figures, described the victory as a reward for the team’s resilience and hard work.
Oyedeji explained that while celebrations are ongoing, the bigger task lies ahead as the Dolphins prepare to represent the country at the continental level.
“Winning the league is only the beginning. We now have to focus on the AWBL Zonal Qualifiers. The goal is to do well on the continent and make Nigeria proud once again,” he said.
He assured that the club’s management will provide adequate preparation, welfare, and support for the players.
“This is about flying the national flag. We will prepare well because we know the responsibility we carry,” he added.
Dolphins secured their second league title with a dramatic 61-55 overtime victory against First Bank in the final of the 2025 Zenith Bank Nigeria Women’s Basketball League Final Eight.
The triumph came seven years after the death of the club’s founder, Wale Aboderin, whose passing in 2018 had cast uncertainty over the team’s future.
Oyedeji thanked fans for their support, urging them to stand by the team as they step into the next chapter.
“This title is for them as well. With their continued encouragement, we believe the best is yet to come,” he concluded.
