Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru is set to undergo medical tests in a bid to ascertain the extent of the injury he suffered during his team’s Serie A derby against city rivals AS Roma on Sunday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The 24-year-old was in the starting line-up named by Lazio gaffer, Maurizio Sarri, in the Derby Capitale fixture against Roma, but the Nigerian international saw only 14 minutes of action, as he was replaced in the opening half by Reda Belahyane, after picking up an apparent thigh injury.
Before Sunday’s derby, Dele-Bashiru had skipped Friday’s training session due to a muscle problem, according to Il Messaggero via La Lazio Siamo Noi.
However, he was passed fit for the clash following a late decision made by the technical staff.
Dele-Bashiru’s absence was felt as the game progressed, as Lazio succumbed to another 1-0 home defeat at the Stadio Olimpico, with Lorenzo Pellegrini netting the game’s only goal in the 38th minute.
La Gazzetta dello Sport informed that, “He is set for tests to determine the severity of the injury. Reda Belahyane would step in starting from next Monday’s game versus Genoa if he had to miss time.”
The clash against Roma was Dele-Bashiru’s fourth consecutive game of the season.
Despite not being a favourite of manager Maurizio Sarri, he has largely played a big part in Lazio’s opening fixtures due to a transfer ban that prevented the club from making any new signings during the summer window.
Sarri had reportedly considered dropping Dele-Bashiru following his disappointing showing in Sassuolo.
However, his unavailability could see young Moroccan Reda Belahyane feature on the left side of the midfield trident, and he will be eager to make an impression on the manager at this stage of the campaign.
