No regrets missing out on Ogun’s N2.5m largesse – 10km walk winner

By Daily Sports Nigeria on May 24, 2025

Ogun State-born athlete, Fadekemi Olude-Erinle, who won the gold medal for Edo State in the women’s 10km walk, at the ongoing 2024 National Sports Festival, has said she doesn’t feel bad for missing out on the N2.5m prize money which has been promised to gold medallists from the host state, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Olude-Erinle won the first medal of the athletics event at the 22nd edition of the festival on Friday, after leading the rest of the field in the first event of the day.

After two hours on the track of the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Olude-Erinle celebrated her victory.

“It is my first competitive event since I gave birth to my child. I have been away from sports for about three years now. I didn’t know I could cope, but thank God I won the race,” the athlete told our correspondent.

“I am representing Edo State because I have been on their payroll since I represented them at the Sports Festival in 2020, which was held in 2021.”

The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has promised to reward every gold medallist from the state with the sum of N2.5m, but the women’s 10km winner, who is from Ogun State, says she doesn’t regret missing out on the largesse.

“I am not after money because I have a long way to go. That is not even far from the motivation. Although Edo State hasn’t promised anything, I am sure they will still reward all the medallists from this Games.”

The track and field event, which began to draw spectators to the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, is expected to run till May 27.
