Team Nigeria came out tops at the second edition of the Confederation of African Athletics Region II Senior Athletics Championships, which ended at the University of Ghana Sports Complex, Accra, on Tuesday.

Nigeria topped the medal table with 15 gold, eight silver and two bronze medals, bringing the team’s total medal haul to 25.

Nigerian athletes dominated the sprint, quarter miles and also won a few medals from throws and jumps to secure the title.

This year’s outing for Team Nigeria is better than last year’s result of 13 gold, four silver, and a bronze medal.

Burkina Faso came second ahead of the Benin Republic with 21 medals, made up of seven gold, 10 silver and four bronze, while the Benin Republic secured six gold, four silver and six bronze medals for a total of 16.

Hosts Ghana, who fielded 30 athletes, finished fourth with three gold, 11 silver and nine bronze medals.

Togo, Ivory Coast and the Gambia were also on the medal log of the two-day competition that attracted over 250 athletes from West Africa.

After a dominant display on the opening day, Nigeria capped off their outing on Tuesday with gold medals in the men’s and women’s 200m as well as both 4x40m relays.

National Sports Festival 100m champion, Chidera Ezeakor, stormed to a new personal best in the men’s 200m to win gold in a time of 20.77s.

Ghana’s Edwin Gadayi followed home in 21.14s for silver, with compatriot Marizuk Shaibu third in 21.21s, and Nigeria’s Audu Abdulgafar finished just outside the medals in fourth.

Nigeria also dominated the women’s 200m final, with Anita Enaruna racing to victory in 23.91s. She was closely followed by compatriot Maria Thompson, who won silver in 24.01s, confirming a Nigerian one-two finish. Gambia’s Sey Isatou completed the podium in 24.25s.

On Monday, Oloaolu Olatunde won his first senior gold for Nigeria, clocking 10.60s in the men’s 100m, while the women’s 100m was equally fruitful for Nigeria, with Chioma Nweke capturing her maiden senior title in 11.62s.
