The Edo State contingent to the Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State is eyeing the top spot as the event comes to an end on Tuesday (today).

As of Monday, Team Edo was placed fourth with 68 medals -12 gold, 32 silver and 24 bronze and were poised to earn more medals after qualifying for the final of many events.

However, the Executive chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele, has commended the team for upholding discipline, resilience, consistency, and the spirit of sportsmanship at the festival.

Enabulele, who stated this in a press statement released by his media aide, Wilson Edoko, has given Team Edo the opportunity to build friendship and a formidable team for the upcoming National Sports Festival, scheduled for May in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

“I commend Team Edo for upholding discipline, resilience, consistency, and the spirit of sportsmanship at the festival. This event has given Team Edo the opportunity to build friendships, promote unity, and showcase their talents. The tournament will help the team address its weaknesses and build on the successes already achieved.

“Beyond winning medals, this event is an opportunity to build a formidable team for the upcoming National Sports Festival, scheduled for May in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

“In athletics, aquatics, para powerlifting, para-athletics, boxing, football, discus, javelin, handball, and swimming, Team Edo has maintained dominance,” the statement noted.

The sports festival featured over 3,400 athletes from the nine Niger Delta states.
