Osimhen named Serie A best striker

By Daily Sports Nigeria on June 3, 2023

Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, has been named Serie A best striker for the outgoing 2022/23 Italian League season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The organiser of the Italian top flight division made this known via their Twitter handle on Friday.

The Super Eagles striker beat off competition from Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez and Rafael Leao of AC Milan to land the award.

Osimhen inspired Napoli to its first Serie A title since the 1989/1990 season.

It is the third in the club’s history after previously winning it in 1987 and 1990.

Osimhen is on the verge of becoming the first African to finish top scorer in the Serie A.

He is currently on 25 goals and is four ahead of closest rival Martinez with just one game left to play.

Also, he has broken George Weah’s record for the most goals scored by an African in Serie A when he took his tally to 47 in the Italian top-flight league.

Meanwhile, two of his Napoli teammates (Kim Min-Jae and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia) and his coach also won awards.

Kvaratskhelia was been named Serie A MVP of the 2022-23 season while Min-Jae of Napoli was adjudged as best defender in Italy.

The Georgia international, Kvaratskhelia stood out as Serie A MVP of the season thanks to 12 goals and 13 assists in 33 games. He inherits the title from Rafael Leao, who took it for Milan last season.
